Santa Maria Novella has been a household name in our shop since Ilse discovered the brand many years ago in a tiny shop in Antwerp. She instantly fell in love with the Italian approach to fragrances and apothecary products. As from today our e-shop will also sell a wide range of Santa Maria Novella products.

Let’s stroll down memory lane...
Santa Maria Novella is one of the oldest apothecaries in the world. Founded in the 12th century by Dominican monks in Florence, they began to harvest medicinal herbs in their gardens to prepare medicines, balms and ointments for the small infirmary of their monastery. When their remarkable products became well-known all over Italy, it became an obvious decision to open the pharmacy to the public.
In the 17th century, the resourceful formulas developed by the monks crossed many borders, all the way to Russia, India and even China.

Santa Maria Novella pays close attention to the art of herbalism, which has triumphed since the company's earliest days and bases all its preparations on herbs and natural lipids

Each of Santa Maria Novella’s products has its own special history. For example, "Acqua di S.M. Novella" is the perfume that has been created personally for Catherine de' Medici in 1533 by the Dominican monks. She took the fragrance with her to France when she married King Henry II of France. For this reason, it is referred to as a perfume rather than a cologne.
Not to mention, Santa Maria Novella's acclaimed pot-pourri consists of a mixture of herbs and flowers specific to the Tuscan hills, which the monks soaked in large terracotta pots from the town of Impruneta.
